AMPLIFI – A Global Health Mentorship Initiative
A Global Health initiative to proactively promote a mentorship network designed to connect and support women pursuing careers in infectious disease and global health research, prevention, surveillance, and policy, while fostering international connections.
AMPLIFI
Advancing Mentorship, Progress, and Leadership to Inspire and Fuel Impact in Global Health
The Global Health Mentorship Initiative (GHMI) is a mentorship network designed to connect and support women pursuing careers in infectious disease and global health research, prevention, surveillance, and policy, while fostering international connections.
Beyond mentorship, this initiative will serve as a professional development hub for women in science, providing skill-building opportunities as well as platforms for international research sharing and networking.
Our phased approach will begin with a pilot program, allowing us to refine the mentorship model and gather feedback from participants. Guided by an advisory board of senior women leaders in the field, we aim to develop institutional partnerships to ensure sustainability and impact.
Our Mentorship Model
Mentorship will be structured as a tiered model within disciplinary blocks—basic science research, public health, clinical medicine, and biotech/pharma. Senior scientists mentor early-career researchers, who in turn mentor graduate students, undergraduates, and high school students.
One-on-One Mentorship
Early-career women, graduate students, and undergraduates will have access to one-on-one mentorship, ensuring they receive guidance tailored to their specific field and career trajectory.
Group Mentorship Sessions
High school students will participate in group mentorship sessions led by women across multiple disciplines, allowing them to explore various fields before choosing a specialization.
Benefits of Career-Stage-Specific Mentorship
This structured, career-stage-specific mentorship approach aims to ensure that mentees receive guidance tailored to their field and trajectory. A virtual seminar series will allow senior scientists, early-career researchers, postdocs, and graduate students to present their work in online meetings open to the full network. This will not only increase visibility for their research but also promote new collaborations and career opportunities.
Future Resources
Once launched, GHMI will provide the following training and skill-development resources for members:
Research Skills Development
Access to training modules covering research methodologies, data analysis, and scientific writing specifically tailored for global health contexts.
Career Development
Resources for CV building, interview preparation, grant writing, and navigating career transitions in the global health landscape.
Leadership Training
Workshops focused on developing leadership skills for women in scientific and public health environments, addressing gender-specific challenges.
Networking Platform
Digital infrastructure to facilitate connections among members across disciplines and geographic locations.
Future Programs & Events
AMPLIFI will host various professional development programs to support women in global health research, including:
Virtual Seminar Series
Regular presentations allowing scientists at all career stages to share their research with the global network, increasing visibility and fostering collaboration.
Science Communication Workshops
Training in effectively communicating research findings to various audiences, from scientific peers to policymakers and the general public.
Policy Translation Workshops
Sessions focused on bridging research and policy, equipping scientists with tools to translate their findings into actionable policy recommendations.
Cross-Disciplinary Forums
Events bringing together women from different disciplines to address complex global health challenges through integrated approaches.
AMPLIFI will also host virtual workshops to equip women scientists with skills essential in today's environment
These workshops will focus on science communication, public engagement, and translating research into policy - key skills for impactful careers in global health.
